Hi! I’m Angela and welcome to my first blog post! I’m going to talk about how to make sure your engagement photos feel like “you” as a couple. I’m going to be using this lovely couple as an example because they absolutely knew what they wanted and we were able to execute their vision perfectly!

Choose the Right Photographer
This may seem like a no brainer to some- but with such a large pool of photographers to choose from, it can be overwhelming! My best advice is to pick a photographer whose photographs make you feel some kind of emotion. That emotion could be nostalgia, cheerfulness, or otherwise moved in some way. You should LOVE their editing style (this is a big one) and you should feel comfortable while communicating with them. For me personally, I send out a questionnaire to your email and then love to hop on a phone call or meet up for coffee so we can get a better feel for each other and discuss your vision in person. This really helps make a connection before the shoot and can ease your nerves the day of!

Know your Vision
Even if you don’t specifically know exactly what you want to do for your shoot, having a general idea or vibe in mind is so helpful to getting photos that scream “you” as a couple. It’s helpful to make a Pinterest vision board to narrow down your ideas. I love receiving vision boards! It doesn’t mean we will have *exactly* the same photos, it just helps me get into your head a little better and visually see what you’re dreaming of. We as photographers are visual people after all! For this couple, they knew they wanted a vintage vibe and to have two different outfits.

Location, Location, Location
You don’t have to have an exact location in mind. As a photographer I have a wide variety of locations with different vibes to choose from. But if you do have a place in mind, make sure to communicate that as well! Sometimes couples want photos at the coffee shop they met at, or like this couple, their favorite local record store. This couple wanted the Scranton Iron Furnaces for their more romantic outfits and Gallery Of Sound record store for their 70’s inspired outfits. I personally think they pulled off both beautifully!

Relax and Be Yourselves
This can be hard for some people when in front of the camera. I don’t give you a bunch of awkward poses and tell you to smile at the camera. Instead, I use prompts like “run up and hug your soon to be wife” or “whisper your favorite cereal in your most seductive voice.” These are a little silly yes, but they get genuine emotion and laughing with each other makes the best smiles! If you’re comfortable in front of the camera, I may give a little less guidance and let you do your thing! My favorite way to capture couples is authentically. I never want you to walk away feeling like you played a part or that your photos don’t match your personailities
